PROGRAM AND MATCH REPORTS

ROUND 1: BROKEN HILL V SUPERDOGS - SATURDAY 4TH APRIL (BROKEN HILL) CLICK "PHOTOS ROUND 1"

BROKEN HILL OUTMINE THE SUPERDOGS

THE Riverland Superdogs ventured off to Broken Hill for their round one clash against the Masters Australian Over 35’s competition newcomers. Saturday’s twilight fixture was a success for the Silver City-siders as they over-ran the ‘Dogs in the last quarter by 10 points.

Canadian recruit Steve ‘The Puck’ Deighton unfortunately strained his driver in his debut match, early in the piece, to his adopted new sport. Paul ‘Weeds’ Matthews transferred his excellent form on the bus trip to Broken Hill onto the field. He was one of a few Superdogs who actually had more possessions than the number of beers during the five-hour journey!

The visitor’s second and third quarters were their best but it was debutant Johnny ‘The Whiz’ Barrett who sharked a goal with his first kick in elite company. The third quarter 85-metre long-prayer from Shane ‘Rowdy’ Healy bounced through for six points. The ball took a ‘Shane Warne’ turn and split the sticks! Another to make his debut, Russell ‘Rusty’ Crawford, will be a handy player once he gets used to some of his new team-mates mannerisms. The Superdogs had to ‘poach’ a couple from Broken Hill including Des ‘The Host’ Klingbeil.

The Broken Hill side had the wind in the last stanza and they overcame a two-goal deficit to play skilful and linking football. Rick ‘Haystack’ Frahn was a general across the backlines and Brett ‘Greeny’ Greenslade’ cleared the ball from centre numerous times. Andy ‘Make-A-Wish’ Bourne was another to battle hard in defence. It was rare to see superstar Sam Ingerson without any goals to his name and that is strange because the weather was dry!

The Superdogs next match is against Wests in Berri on Sunday the 19th April from 1230pm.

SCORE: Broken Hill 8.7 (55) d Superdogs 7.3 (45)

GOALS: J. Barrett; S. Healy; N. Kossatch; 1 (Klingbeil; Hocking; Cole each kicked 1 as ‘fill-ins’ for the Superdogs)

BEST: P. Matthews, S. Healy, B. Greenslade, R. Frahn, A. Bourne
ROUND 2: SUPERDOGS V WEST - SUNDAY 19TH APRIL (BERRI)

THE ‘HOFF’ FEASTS ON WESTS

THE Riverland Superdogs may have lost the rugged Paul ‘Weeds Cupcake’ Matthews (knee soreness) and Nick ‘Kossy’ Kossatch (Power barracking commitments) but it did not stop them from winning their first game against Wests at Berri Oval on Sunday.

It was a keenly fought contest and club president Lance ‘Buckets’ Gum suffered from a big ‘Make-A-Wish-Foundation’ night. Unfortunately for the big fella his hamstring gave way. He was relieved for the hamstring to twinge!

Peter ‘Hoffy’ Hoffmann returned to be a powerful performer with three goals and spells in ruck swapping with Ben ‘Spider’ McPhee. Paul ‘Arny’ Arnold also played his first game of the year after starring in the Loxton cross-country carnival recently. This man has serious fitness abilities!

Diminutive Johnny ‘The Whiz’ Barrett missed an easy goal opportunity but managed to snare his second for the season.

Wests were five-points in front early in the last quarter but the likes of Shane’ Rowdy’ Healy and the skill of Rob ‘Hammer’ Romeo steadied the home side.

Newcomers Mark ‘Magic’ Upton and Trevor ‘Ted’ Faehrman were impressive and the ex-Berri player ‘Ted’ managed not to break any bones. Their experience in the RFL translated into the elite level.

The Superdogs confront Mid North in Clare on Sunday May 3rd.

SCORE: Superdogs 11.7 (73) d Wests 7.3 (45)

GOALS: P. Hoffmann; T. Faehrman 3, P. Hall 2, J. Barrett; S. Ingerson; R. Romeo 1

BEST: P. Hoffmann, R. Romeo, P. Arnold, T. Faehrman, R. Frahn, B. Greenslade.
ROUND 3: MID NORTH V SUPERDOGS - SUNDAY 3RD MAY (BLYTH) CLICK "PHOTOS ROUND 3"

SAM SIZZLES WITH EIGHT OF THE BEST

RIVERLAND’S master’s over-35’s football side, the Superdogs, travelled to Blyth in the Mid North and returned home 31-point victors.

With a depleted side the Doggies ‘went to work’ after a tardy start. The spring-heeled Nick ‘Kossy’ Kossatch was not on the bus trip and therefore had a reason to jump higher in ruck as his lady friend Nat was in the crowd. He was inspired by the Power’s win over those Crows so adrenalin was pumping!

The first term was tight but Darren ‘Titty’ Tieste concentrated on winning some clearances from deftly palmed ‘Kossy’ taps and fellow small Paul ‘Weeds’ Matthews showed now ill effects of a sore knee.

The game was played in excellent spirit and Rick ‘Haystack’ Frahn certainly was not playing a ‘stinker’ of a game. Few would disagree especially near a pack in the middle of the ground. A magnificent blind turn and goal from Jeff ‘Jeffro’ Coates in the second quarter was a highlight

Sam ‘Lewy’ Ingerson, after two sub-par games by his standards, was at the end of lace-out passes from ‘Titty’, Shane ‘Rowdy’ Healy and ‘Jeffro’. He finished with eight but he did have the opportunity to ‘dish’ of a couple passes to a ‘hungry’ ‘Kossy’ when the ruckman drifted forward.

It was all about providing an option. To ‘Lewy’ it was all about him!

Riverland’s defence were superbly led by Anton ‘Rod Carter’ Coates and Paul ‘Halltrain’ Hall. The Rod Carter-clone was a spoiling machine and the defence held firm when the Northerners got on top with three quick majors in the third quarter.

The Doggies settled and booted three goals in succession before the last quarter. The last quarter produced more magic moments and none better than Chris ‘Racer’ White’s ‘blinded-by-the-sun-mark’ near the clubhouse wing.

Other highlights were ‘Kossy’s’ growing handball statistics. It is a feature he has been working on in the off season!

.SCORE: Superdogs 15.7 (97) d Mid North 11.10 (76)

GOALS: S. Ingerson 8, Gill 2 (Mid North ‘recruit’), L. Gum; J. Barrett; S. Healy; D. Tieste; J. Coates 1

BEST: D. Tieste, A. Coates, J. Coates, P. Matthews, S. Ingerson, R. Frahn
REPRESENTATIVE MATCH: MAF SA V BROKEN HILL - SUNDAY 17TH MAY (BROKEN HILL)
ROUND 4: SUPERDOGS V GAWLER - SUNDAY 31ST MAY (BERRI)

RIVERLAND SUPERDOGS GO DOWN IN BERRI

The Riverland Superdogs broke their ‘record-breaking’ winning stretch at Berri Oval after Gawler defeated them by 10 points on Sunday.

It was a physical and hard-fought epic and Canadian exchange schoolteacher Steve Deighton (here on holidays in other words!) revelled in overcast conditions.

He was in-and-under and continually ran to the correct spots and we all know what Rick ‘Haystack’ Frahn does week in and week out apart from sampling amber fluid during the Paringa Swans’ home games!

The hosts led by a goal before producing some of their better football during the second and with Nick ‘Kossy’ Kossatch seeing clearly – the Doggies led by 18-points at half time.

They over-used the ball in the second half but Brett ‘Greeny’ Greenslade and Shane ‘Rowdy’ Healy were the only ones whose decision-making was clear.

Gawler hit the front just before three quarter time and they held on to win in gutsy fashion after losing two players through injury.

Nurse Nat was at work and she tended to one of the Gawler players admitted to the Berri Hospital and thankfully another nurse took over because Nat thought he was not good looking enough!

The hosts had their chances but over-use of the ball in their forward entries were costly as was ‘Kossy’s’ opponent booting four goals but Sam Ingerson was held goal-less as well!!

Steven Blasé played a great and hard hitting game at half back in his first game for a couple of years and little piston-legged Johnny ‘The Whiz’ Barrett get his customary goal.

The Superdogs play Easts on Sunday week on the 14th June at Foxfield Oval in Athelstone.

SCORE: Gawler 8.6 (54) d Riverland Superdogs 7.2 (44)

GOALS: T. Faehrmann 3, J. Barrett; R. Frahn; S. Healy 1

BEST: S. Deighton, R. Frahn, S. Healy, B. Greenslade, S. Blasé, P. Hoffmann

ROUND 5: EASTS V SUPERDOGS - SUNDAY 14TH JUNE (EASTS)

The Riverland Superdogs went down in valiant fashion against the Ingle Farm Football Club-based East club by 27 points at a rain-soaked Foxfield Oval in Adelaide on Sunday.
It was a tough and physical match and Nick ‘Kossy’ Kossatch yet again drifted forward, unaccountable, to mark and then boot the Superdogs’ first goal.
It was preceded by ex-Ingle Farm team-mate Jason ‘Mooney’ Bradbrook slotting East’s major.
The burly painter-by-trade Bradbrook kicked three goals marred by some sitter shots at goal that could have been kicked by five-year-olds!
Triple All-Australian at MAF level Grant Hawksworth was opposed to Sam Ingerson and the gun forward found it tough against the bandido-clad player from the Easts Demons.
It was a 32-point lead to Easts at the long break but a sensational and freakish Lance ‘El Pres’ outside-of-the-right-foot checkside goal raised hopes for the visitors
Goal assistant Trevor ‘Ted’ Faehrmann was a relieved man following his slick hands.
Paul ‘Weeds’ Matthews (despite kicking the wrong way in one passage of play!!) and new recruit Tibor ‘Hungarian Sausage’ Matiscsak’ and brother-in-law of 'Kossy', were tremendous in defence as was Rick ‘Haystack’ Frahn.
Whilst ‘Mooney’ booted three goals for Easts, fullback Anton ‘Wow’ Coates, stuck to his task brilliantly.
An attempted ‘screamer’ mark by the ‘Weed’ was penalised and the Superdogs fought it out against a superior side.
Brett Greenslade, player-coach and stirring, Darren Tieste denied his lack of height to be a valuable contributor for the Riverlanders. They meet Pooraka at home in Berri Oval Sunday week in a game they should regain form.
SCORES: Easts 8.14 (62) d Superdogs 5.5 (35)
GOALS: N. Kossatch; S. Healy; L. Gum (sensational goal); Faehrmann; B. Greenslade 1
BEST: R. Frahn. P. Matthews, A. Coates, T. Matiscsak, S. Healy, B. Greenslade

REPRESENTATIVE MATCH: MAF SA V MT GAMBIER - SUNDAY 21ST JUNE (ADELAIDE)
ROUND 6: SUPERDOGS V POORAKA - SUNDAY 28TH JUNE (BERRI)

SUPERDOGS RETURN TO WINNER’S LIST
The Riverland Superdogs Master’s over 35’s football side returned to the winner’s list in barnstorming fashion against Pooraka to win by 87 points at Berri Oval on Sunday.
After an inaccurate first half, highlighted by Johnny ‘The Whiz’ Barrett’s ‘goal hungriness’ – the Dogs’ debutant Scott Muller (four goals) was a focal point and Paul ‘Weeds’ Matthews racking up telling possessions.
Another new player, Mark Wilksch, donned the red and black guernsey and played a superb game on a wing.
He appreciated being a player rather than copping abuse as an RFL umpire during his ‘men in white’ days.
‘Weeds’ was hit and winded unceremoniously leaving the ex-Paringa hardnut prostate on the turf before he recovered to star for his side.
The hosts booted 10.3 in the second half including a brilliant Pooraka error that gifted Lance an open goal.
He then did a ‘Warren Tredrea bow’.
What is guaranteed is that the Doggies will not lose by 119 points next week against Murray Bridge there.
Geoff Cubbin gave Muller support as another handy forward with some strong marks and the schoolteacher booted an important goal.
Shane ‘Rowdy’ Healy played his usual creative game and slotted three majors whilst paramedic Brett ‘Greeny’ Greenslade did not need to revive ‘Weeds’.
He instead dominated in midfield and the centre clearances.
SCORES: Superdogs 14.17 (101) d Pooraka 2.2 (14)
GOALS: S. Muller 4, S. Healy 2 (1 super), P. Rowe 2, J. Barrett; M. Wilksch; G. Cubbin; D. Tieste; L. Gum 1
BEST: M. Wilksch, S. Healy, P. Matthews, S. Muller, B. Greenslade, J. Barrett
ROUND 7: RIVER MURRAY V SUPERDOGS - SUNDAY 5TH JULY (MANNUM)

SLICK RIVER MURRAY STEAM OVER SUPERDOGS

The Riverland Superdogs failed to capitalise on their midfield centre clearance dominance to go down by 32 points against River Murray at Mannum Oval on Sunday.

The under-strength visitors were off to a sluggish start but were encouraged by the efforts of East Murray recruit Dave Francis.

The big forward bowled a few of the host players over in a strong display.

A spectator told his mum; “Look, there are little people playing out there.”

That was in reference to the Superdogs Johnny ‘The Whiz’ Barrett as the small forward was lining up for a goal straight in front but only for the paramedic to miss!

He ended with two goals to be one of the better players.

Brendon Rowe, despite his baby-face looks, played a mature game at fullback.

A player who struggles in the mature nature in personality, Paul ‘Weeds’ Matthews, again was outstanding in the centre as was Brett ‘Greeny’ Greenslade.

He relished happy Port Adelaide supporter Nick Kossatch’s taps, but that is all ‘Kossy’ was useful at.

There was a passage of play between Trevor ‘Ted’ Faehrmann and the recovered Sid Norton where both players shared some 10 possessions between them before ‘coughing’ the ball up to the opposition.

Player-coach, Darren Tieste, finally played in a position where he had to man up out of a back pocket.

He was superb, often being out-reached (which is not hard to do), but was able to spoil and provide rebound.

That is what the Superdogs will be keen to do against Blackwood when these sides meet at Berri Oval on Sunday 19th July.

RIVER MURRAY 10.8 (68) D RIVERLAND SUPERDOGS 5.6 (36)

GOALS: J. Barrett 2, C. White; D. Francis; T. Faehrmann 1

BEST: D. Tieste, P. Matthews, B. Rowe, B. Greenslade, D. Francis, J. Barrett

ROUND 8: SUPERDOGS V BLACKWOOD - SUNDAY 19TH JULY (BERRI)

LATE CHARGE BY SUPERDOGS NOT ENOUGH

A costly last-quarter 25-metre penalty by Superdogs All-Australian ruckman Nick Kossatch proved the difference as his side went down by two points in a thrilling match against Blackwood at Berri.

‘Kossy’ was devastated post-match but will seek Barry Hall Anger Management Counselling very soon.

He did dominate however with plenty possessions and hit outs.

It was that brain fade though.

Blackwood displayed skilled via the likes of Nick Wilkey and Adelaide senior meteorologist Andrew Watson as they led by 22 points at half time.

Riverland had two burly forwards Brett Backwell and Daniel Reynolds who had a huge influence in the last quarter.

‘Blackers’ booted two goals and big Reynolds made a path and barrelled some of his opponents to the ground.

In the absence of last year’s best and fairest Sam Ingerson – his team-mates will be hoping Reynolds will play out the season.

Paul ‘Weeds’ Matthew booted two terrific goals to be a star in yet another great game from him and Brett ‘Greeny’ Greenslade did feel green around the gills after a hard night but worked hard to be another good player.

A tanned Rick ‘Haystack’ Frahn, fresh from a trip to the warm and tropical northern states, was classy in the forward lines.

The Superdogs play Sacred Heart Old Collegians on Sunday week in Adelaide.

BLACKWOOD 7.4 (46) D RIVERLAND SUPERDOGS 6.8 (44)

GOALS: P. Matthews; B. Backwell 2, R. Romeo; T. Faehrmann 1

BEST: A. Coates, N. Kossatch (despite costing the game with a 25-metre penalty and a goal to the visitors), B. Backwell, D. Reynolds, B. Greenslade, P. Matthews, R. Frahn

ROUND 9: PHANTOMS V SUPERDOGS - SUNDAY 9TH AUGUST (HILLS)

DOGS GIVE IT TO PHANTOMS FROM BEHIND

Finally the Riverland Superdogs made it another win against Adelaide-based Phantoms at Lobethal Oval by seven points in the Master’s Football League on Sunday.

It was a keenly-fought and titanic struggle, especially by Paringa Independent Football League (and 99-game player) Paul Matthews, who let his contents show at half time.

He and a fellow tall and rucking team-mate suffered after the Miss Paringa Footy Show the previous night.

The ‘Dogs were off to a shocking start as the hosts established a solid lead at quarter time by 17 points.

Matthews, again, was amongst it, getting hard-ball wins.

Newcomer Don Gardiner had an enthralling clash with Elvis Presley clone ‘Leo’ – but ‘is Don was good against the Phantoms’ show-pony.

‘Elvis’ had almost left the playing arena as some Doggy players remonstrated with the side-burn-clad forward and he soon thought that hamburgers were a treat.

Jeffro Coates displayed nous up forward and a one-handed mark just underlined the Bridgestone tyre-fitter’s skill and ability to perform in front of a large crowd (and good-looking female customers at his work).

The Doggie’s made a change, courtesy of Brett Greenslade’s suggestion to coach Darren Tieste, at three-quarter-time.

It worked a treat with Peter Hoffmann switched to full-forward.

His goal from over his head was as flukey as it gets but the eagerly-fought (to ruck for Berri A-grade) ‘Hoffy’ has other ideas.

They are that he wants to remain in a winning club!

Whilst ‘Weeds’ Matthews coughed and spluttered through another brilliant game, Shane ‘Rowdy’ Healy made sure that the Superdog’s broke their losing streak with a neat goal from a Rick Frahn hand-pass.

It was a wonderful bus trip home high-lighted by Paul “George Clooney’ Arnold’s one-liners.

The Superdogs confront Portland on Sunday 23rd August at Berri Oval.

SUPERDOGS: 6.17 (55) d PHANTOMS: 7.6 (48)

GOALS: J. Coates: B. Greenslade: P. Matthews: P. Hoffmann: J. Barrett: S. Healy 1

BEST: M. Wilksch, P. Matthews, P. Hoffmann, D. Gardiner, D. Francis, P. Arnold

ROUND 10: SUPERDOGS V PORTLAND - SUNDAY 23RD AUGUST (BERRI)

PORTLAND SHOW POWER HOW IT’S REALLY DONE

The Riverland Superdogs were rolled by visiting side Portland, from Adelaide, by a huge 55 points in the over-35’s Super-rules football at Berri Oval on Sunday.

Portland, whose jumper is that of hapless Port Adelaide Power, dominated from go to woe with their Aboriginal midfielders dazzling with their skills.

If only Port Adelaide played like Portland, a certain player lamented.

Paul ‘Weeds’ Matthews did boot the host’s first goal and, boy, the ‘Dog Tag’ best and fairest red-hot favourite was ecstatic about it!

He was content with running the water for the Grand Final-bound Paringa footballers during the season and is setting himself up for a ‘Grand Finale’ game against Fitzroy on Sunday week in Adelaide.

Things did not improve after quarter time but the gutsy efforts of Anton Coates, who was dirty after Paringa beat his old side Cobdogla in the 2nd Semi-Final of the Independent Football League, could not be questioned.

Coates’ ex-Cobby team-mate and cousin Jeff Coates nailed a drop-kick nine-pointer ‘Super Goal’ from point blank range assisted by the hamstrung Peter Hoffmann.

He soon was in disbelief after his North Melbourne idols did the improbable and upset St Kilda.

Lance Gum, David Francis of East Murray fame and the smoking Shane Hannagan were most impressive for the Superdogs.

Player-coach Darren Tieste could not take a kick in the third stanza after a laughing fit due to umpire Mark Schwartzkopff’s only correct decision of the game.

The other Doggies to offer offensive resistance were the retiring Neville ‘Enzo’ Ebert, who showed incredible athleticism and auto electrician Danny ‘Father of Steve’ Raeder, who kicked a major each.

The bus trip ‘Mad Sunday’ starts after the Superdogs have played Fitzroy on Sunday the 6th September in Adelaide.

PORTLAND 13.11 (89) d SUPERDOGS 4.10 (34)

GOALS: P. Matthews; N. Ebert; D. Raeder; J. Coates 1

BEST: S. Hannagan, S. Ingerson, P. Matthews, A. Coates, D. Francis, L. Gum

ROUND 11: FITZROY V SUPERDOGS - SUNDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER (GAWLER)

‘WEEDS’ ENHANCES MEDAL CHANCES BUT SUPERDOGS LOSE IN FINAL MATCH

Fitzroy defeated a coureageous Superdogs outfit by eight points in the final round of the Master’s Australian Football League.

Again Paul ‘Weeds’ Matthews, after being a runner for the flag-winning Paringa Swans football club yesterday, was superb all day.

‘Weeds’ also copped a kick to the head and some battle scars to show for it.

His premiership medal ‘clinked’ around his neck during the game much to co-sharer Mark ‘Muffler’ Westley’s disgust (who was still at the Paringa pub).

Baker-by-trade Sam Ingerson was a marking target at centre half forward and booted two goals as did Jeff ‘Jeffro’ Coates, who baulked cleverly, reliving his Cobdogla halcyon days, to kick truly.

Paul’Pacemaker’ Rowe nailed a sensational six-pointer to tighten things up.

Lyrup ‘recruit’ Roy Grenfell, aged some 14 years to be deemed eligible for the match and was a class act in midfield.

It were the Superdogs turnovers which cost them the game and something coach Darren ‘Titty’ Tieste will assess during the off-season.

Other better players was policeman Wally Milich, who patrolled the backline and arrested many Fitzroy attacks.

Rick ‘Haystack’ Frahn, back home after a couple weeks away in Asia and a bout of jetlag, took many marks in defence.

Nick ‘Kossy’ Kossatch had the bug but gave away no 25-metre penalties but a few handballs off to running players!

The ‘Dogs have their 25-year reunion this Friday night along with the ‘Dog Tag’ Best and Fairest Night at the Berri Resort Hotel.

FITZROY 8.8 (56) D RIVERLAND SUPERDOGS 7.6 (48)

GOALS: S. Ingerson; J. Coates 2, P. Rowe; A. Goodes (yes Adam but not from Sydney); B. Greenslade 1
